REVIEWS/ COMMENTS

Practical Sailor - Basic construction of the Freedom 33 hull and deck is, in our opinion, among the best in the production boat building industry. The Freedom 33 is stiffer (and, we think, foot-for foot, faster) than her sisters in the Freedom line The boat does have speed and liveliness that exceeds that of most out-and-out cruising boats of her size and in many conditions can rival the performance of the many so-called racer-cruisers or “performance cruisers.” The Freedom 33 impressive and innovative decor and layout, the stowage capacity is by far the best we have seen in a boat of this size. In particular, the huge galley drywell, incorporating a sliding section for seldom used items, is nonpareil. The engine (Yanmar 3GMD diesel) under the companionway is well above average in accessibility. The forward cabin can be completely closed off from the rest of the boat, including the head, by its own door.

If you want to turn heads in every port you enter, the Freedom 33 is the boat to do it. She will point at least as well as (or better than) any sloop her size. She tacks through 90 degrees and can point to within 45 degrees of the wind The boat sails much better than the average 33-foot sloop or ketch, and it is easily handled. This is a fast, comfortable, and capable sailboat.

Eric Sponberg NA Chief Engineer at TPI

TPI in 1980 were converting from aluminum masts to carbon fiber masts. Well-kept masts should last the life of the boat. There was plenty of safety factor designed into the rigs. The Freedom 33 in 1982 was converted from a center boarder to a keel boat. The centerboard took up too much interior room, and the overall weight was too high, and that is why we took the centerboard out and added the keel. The keel version is a much more sea kindly boat than the centerboard version. Boats with two-ply wrap-around sails will likely not be as weatherly as single ply sails with full battens. The MK I is popular in England as the Freedom 35

Full Description

With all lines lead to the cockpit, sailing is simplicity, haul the sails, slacken the lazyjacks and sheet in, to tack just turn the wheel. No grinding is necessary and multiple sails are not filling the V birth; should the wind blow, throw a in a reef from the cockpit.

A waterline length of 30ft allows her to sail comfortably at speeds regularly exceeding 7kts.

Down below enjoy “The aesthetic impression created by the interior joiner work is among the best we have had in any production boat. The warmth and illusion of spaciousness imparted by these light colored woods will appeal to many sailors. It certainly does to us”. Practical Sailor

HULL, DECK, MASTS

Built buy the renowned Tillotson-Pearson Inc.(TPI), leader in the development of coring for hull structures and carbon fiber for light stiff laminates and builder of J boats, Etchells, etc. Cored hulls reduce weight add strength, thermal and acoustical insulation.

One piece Carbon fiber masts fitted with sail tracks are 30% lighter though stiffer than previous two piece aluminum masts, reducing weight aloft, pitching and increasing performance. With no shrouds; howling in the rigging is eliminated as well deck stress/leaks from chain plates.

Standard booms are fabricated of aluminum and are fitted with outhaul, and sheaves for two reefs each, with loose footed sails, the extra windage wishbone booms create is not necessary.

Bottom was recently stripped and refinished with Interlux 2000 barrier coat, topped with Interlux Micron CSC, afterward all thru hulls where rebeaded.

The companionway hatch is formed translucent acrylic which slides into a fiberglass sea hood with water channels for drainage.

SAILS

Sails are modern full batten Aramid (Kevlar) laminate and are loose footed for easy draft adjustment all the way to the foot; they are 60% the weight of Dacron giving great light and heavy air performance with the ease of hoisting. The efficiency of these sails now requires a reef be put in a little earlier. These sails are 589 sq ft; larger than the advertised total of 516 sq ft.

SAIL CONTROL

Blocks and fittings are predominately Schaefer, Nicro-Fico, and Harken. Running rigging includes halyards, sheets, outhauls and reef lines for main and mizzen.

One Barient #23ST self-tailing winch on the port cabin top controls the main, mizzen and staysail halyards and the lazyjacks. Another Barient #23ST self-tailing winch on the starboard cabin top, reefs both main and mizzen sails, and controls the main sheet. Lines pass through 3 starboard and 5 port clutches, hangers are provided for all tails.

The main sheet, attached to a Kenyon 1.25 traveler has a 4:1 tackle with clam cleat mounted on the starboard cabin top. The mizzen, attached to a traveler mounted on the transom has a 4:1 tackle with clam cleat on the block.

The staysail is tacked to a track on the cabin top centerline and hauled up the mizzen mast in a sock, sheeted through snatch blocks on the toe rail to Barient #16s on the cockpit combings. Running rigging is snatched to the quarter to provide luff tension for the sail when in use.

STEERING GEAR

Edson pedestal steering with 32” wheel drives bronze rudder quadrant. Steering cables are readily accessible under the teak grating. A wheel brake, with new pad allows hands free steering with the wind, or use the Autohelm 3000 to steer a compass course. An emergency tiller fits the transom mounted rudder head. Ritchie SP-5 binnacle compass is mounted on the pedestal. A folding Edson teak cockpit table is also mounted on the binnacle.

INTERIOR

Joinery of ash and teak woods, finished in a satin varnish are custom formed to graceful curves throughout. The cabin sole is teak and holly. Cabin ceilings are finished in white with cedar battens.

GALLEY

The U shaped galley at the bottom of the companionway to port is a 7 cu. ft. ice box with acrylic sliding shelf. Three burner Hillerange LPG stainless steel gimballed stove and oven with safety bar mounted inboard of stove. 10” deep stainless steel sink with pressure hot and cold water. Adjacent to sink is a 3 cu. ft. dry storage locker with sliding bin and outboard are two drawers. A rack for dishes is abaft the icebox. Lockers with sliding doors run the full length of the galley. A locker below the sink gives access to two fresh water tank valves and sinks drain seacock. A Lewmar Ocean 40, 19”x19” hatch is above the stove.

MAIN SALON

Handrails are installed full length, on both sides of the main cabin for ease of movement while under way. A gimballed double drop leaf table within easy reach allows people to comfortably sit port or starboard. A Lewmar Ocean 40, 19”x19” hatch is above and six 5”x5” opening ports. Lighting is provided by three swivel reading lights and three dome lights.

To port is a 6’7” long “L” shaped settee with 3 storage lockers outboard behind the seatbacks, 2 lockers under the seats and shelf above with an adjustable position, fiddled box for books. The holding tank and one 30 gallon fresh water tank are located here.

To starboard is a 7’ long settee which converts to a wide single berth and has 3 storage lockers outboard behind the seatbacks and two cabinets above with four hinged doors. One 50 gallon fresh water tank is located under the settee. A hanging locker forward to starboard is fitted with rattan fronts for ventilation.

FORECABIN

Enclosed behind the stateroom door are wide 6’7” long V-berths with insert cushion giving comfortable owners space. Stowage shelves are fitted above each berth with storage lockers below, private hanging locker to starboard fitted with rattan fronts, reading lights on each side, Lewmar Ocean 60, 22”x22” hatch above and two 5”x 5” ports for ventilation.

HEAD

Raritan Marine Toilet valved for two tanks and overboard bypass for use offshore, is plumbed to a 10 gallon holding tank. A 14” diameter stainless steel sink drains overboard via the galley thru hull located well inboard to prevent flooding when heeled. Shower with teak grate uses hot and cold pressure water and an independent electric pump draining overboard astern. Ventilation is achieved through both a 5” x 12” porthole and a Lewmar Ocean 10, 12” x 12” deck hatch. A fluorescent fixture provides excellent interior illumination.

NAVIGATION

Chart table measures 40” X 32”, with chart storage under. Outboard of the table are double shelves for instruments and reference books. Navigator’s seat is at the forward end of a 6’5”long quarter berth. A Garmin 421S GPS MAP on a RAM mount connects to a NEMA2000 backbone to Airmar P319 sonar and DST800 depth, speed, temperature transducers. A VHF radio with DSC and cockpit remote also has a GPS display. A Boss MR1305WUA Stereo with two speakers is MP3 and USB compatible for entertainment.

ENGINE

Removable engine box panels with lead sandwich insulation give complete access to engine and machinery spaces. The engine is cooled through new hoses by a recently rebuilt Sen-Dure heat exchanger and also heats the new Isotemp hot water tank.

A Yanmar 3GMD 20 hp. three cylinder diesel drives a KM3A 2.61:1 reduction transmission to a recently replaced 1” diameter stainless steel shaft , flexible coupling, interior adjustable stuffing box, and rebalanced 16” RH 11” two blade bronze propeller.

Engine instrumentation is recessed into the starboard aft cockpit and includes warning lights for temperature, oil pressure, and voltage with a gauge for the tachometer. New fuel line with manual primer feed primary Racor 500FG and secondary Yanmar fuel filters. A clean out port and fuel gauge in the 25 gallon aluminum fuel tank is located under the cabin sole at the base of the companionway in the galley. The fuel filler is located in the cockpit sole.

ELECTRICAL

Two 90 amp hour heavy duty deep cycle batteries with a selector switch which may be changed while the engine is running without damage to the 35 amp alternator feeding the Blue Sea Systems ACR 7610 which apportions the charging rate to each battery.

12V DC power distribution is through a Bass modular panel with battery condition meter and circuit breakers. Navigation lights conforming to marine standards include steaming and masthead light. 120V AC power is sourced from the cockpit 30A connection through a GUEST 4531001 galvanic isolator to a Blue Sea Systems 8029 three position panel for distribution to; the Xantrex Truecharge battery charger with remote monitor panel and temperature sensor; the Isotemp Slim B 15L hot water heater and two GFCI outlets, in galley and head.
