Review
From Boatbuys.com:
Setting out to purchase a sport express cruiser between 26 and 28 feet, you will quickly discover that there is an abundance of choice on the market. In such a competitive market segment, the most critical buying consideration outside of performance on the water has to be utilization of space especially, in the cockpit area.
The new Maxum 2600SE has really focused on a creative cockpit. They offer two seating configurations, one with a single bench with a transom opening from the swim platform on the starboard side or optionally, with two stern seats and the access from the swim platform in the middle. Both of these seat options have sliding mechanisms to extend them backwards giving more room in the cockpit area ( this is not the first time I have seen this on a cruiser of this size), but what was really innovative was that the seat backs could be folded forward allowing passengers to face the stern when the boat is anchored.
What a great idea for all those times you spend watching the children playing in the water off the swim platform on a hot summer's day. Finally, a boat that offers a comfortable and accessible seating position to the swim platform.
The swim platform is integral and is quite large with a built-in boarding ladder for easy access from the water. Continuing with ways to make the stern a playground, the clever stern seats also fold down flat making a perfect place to catch those elusive sun rays or to serve as another sleeping place at night. In front of the stern seat is a large, removable table. The helm seat can be rotated to face this table for dining and conversation; another clever innovation.
Beside the helm seat is a rear-facing lounge seat with a sliding window in the seat base that delivers ventilation and light to the aft sleeping area in the cabin. Behind the helm chair is a molded-in sink with fresh water and the refrigerator is mounted in the side panel. The fully equipped instrument panel is well positioned to be easy to read when seated especially with the non glare dash. For easy access to the engine, the hatch is equipped with an electric hydraulic lift system lifting a large section of the rear seating area.
Down below, the cabin has over six feet of head room and features a well equipped galley, dinette, a large mid-cabin berth, and a fully enclosed head. The galley has a microwave, refrigerator, single burner electric stove, reasonable storage and a swing out counter top extension. Nearby to the dinette seats was a 15" flat screen TV with DVD and CD complete with helm and transom remote controls.
Taking the boat out on the water, it jumps up onto plane quickly and accelerated on to a maximum speed of just over 40 mph at 5,000 rpm. The acceleration from rest to planing speed was just under 5 seconds from 0 to 20 mph. It is unfortunate that there is often little wind or waves when it comes to boat test day so, we could not determine how well the boat ran in really rough water but, the 2600SE carved its way through all the twists and turns we put it through with surefooted confidence. At all the different speeds, there was no slamming or banging as we cut through different wakes from other boats. The Maxum's integrated hull system design really does seem to deliver a smooth ride with solid handling.
Overall the Maxum 2600SE was a pleasure to run on the water, but what the designers did with the cockpit area gets a "two thumbs up" from me.
